Medfield State Hospital

Medfield State Hospital

Medfield State Hospital is a former psychiatric facility located in Medfield, Massachusetts. Not only was it the state’s first facility for patients diagnosed with chronic mental illnesses, it was also the first psychiatric hospital designed using the “Cottage Plan” layout, with a network of separate buildings and dreams of a strong relationship between the hospital and the town. The original campus was developed between 1896 and 1914, and at the hospital’s peak it had 58 buildings spread across 1.4 square miles of land and was capable of housing 2,200 patients. Until its closure in April 2003, it was entirely self-sufficient, with hospital patients and staff raising livestock and growing produce and resources to generate heat, light, and power. Since closing, it has been used as a film location for The Box (2009), Shutter Island (2010), and The New Mutants (2020), and the grounds are open to the public from sunrise to sunset (but public access into the buildings is not permitted — all photos included in this series were taken with express permission).
